As the new season approaches, we’re answering questions from players, fans, and the local community. Why was the club founded, what are its goals, and what lies ahead? Chairman Ondřej Scotti, the driving force behind the project, provides the answers.
❓ Why was Opava Patriots FC founded?
I wanted to build a club in Opava that would be different – open, fair, and rooted in values. Not just about results, but about people. Today’s sports environment often lacks authenticity, joy of play, and a place where children can truly grow – not only as athletes but as individuals.
One of the main reasons I started this project is because I have three young children myself. I think about how I’ll guide them, what values I want to pass on, and what kind of environment I can offer. I want to create such a space for others too – a place where kids feel good, where they want to move, enjoy sports, make friends, and grow.
It bothers me that many kids are overtrained from a young age, focus on just one sport, and are burned out by the age of 15. That often it’s money, not talent, that determines who plays. That parents push for performance instead of letting sport be a natural and joyful part of life. Whatever happened to the simple desire to “go play with friends”?
At Patriots, we want to take a different path. Offer children an environment where they can build a healthy relationship with sport, develop friendships, trust in themselves and others. Where they’ll grow not only physically but also in responsibility, mutual respect, and a natural desire to learn and improve. We’re not here to immediately create professionals – we want to give kids a foundation for sports, but more importantly, for life.
We plan not just football, but also physical training, camps, trips, events with parents, a focus on mental well-being, and a safe space. I believe in a model where kids will decide for themselves – when the time comes – whether they want to move toward competitive or elite levels. And if they do, we’ll support them. And if they don’t, they’ll still have years of positive memories to look back on.
At the same time, I feel a responsibility to help change the football environment. Bring back humanity, common sense, and respect for children, parents, and coaches. To build a club that works sustainably – without shortcuts, shouting, or pressure. A place that’s a joy to be part of – as a player, a parent, or a coach.
❓ Why did you also create a men’s team, if your focus is mainly on youth?
Creating the men’s team was intentional – we wanted the name Opava Patriots FC to become known more quickly. We also wanted to show that we’re serious. But never at the expense of quality or the values we stand for. We don’t look for shortcuts – we’re in it for the long haul.
❓ What’s the current status of the team and preparations for the season?
Honestly – it’s complicated. Two players joined with great enthusiasm, several dozen contacted us, but most eventually backed out. I understand – it’s a new club, no facilities, no track record. But we’re just at the beginning – everyone starts somewhere. We might reconsider participating in the cup or even the league. I don’t want to rush anything or do things just because “we’re supposed to.” If we do something, we want to do it right.
❓ What do you think about being compared to weaker teams, even though you haven’t played yet?
It’s disappointing. Not because I take it personally, but because it shows how much reputation overshadows facts. We haven’t even played a single match. People are judging us without knowing what we’re trying to build. But I believe that over time, those who seek more than just stats and assumptions will find their way to us.
❓ What does the club need most right now?
People. Players, coaches, volunteers – but above all, people who share our vision. Facilities and gear can be built over time. But relationships and values need to be established from day one.
❓ What’s next – what are your immediate plans?
If I see that we don’t have the conditions for a respectful start, we may skip the cup or league this year. I’d rather delay and focus on building the academy and infrastructure than chase results at any cost. We’re doing this for the kids, not for the scoreboard.
❓ Is it still worth joining the club?
If someone is excited to be part of something new, help the club grow, and values honest work, the answer is clear — yes. Everyone who believes in values like integrity, perseverance, and teamwork is welcome here.
In conclusion…
“We’re not creating a club just for today. We’re creating an environment for years to come. If you want to be a part of it, the door is open.”
